MISSOULA – Ice sports enthusiasts are telling Missoula County commissioners they’re looking to stay at the Glacier Ice Rink for the future, and are willing to keep working with the county as plans are made for reconfiguring the fairgrounds.
Leaders of the Missoula Area Youth Hockey Association have been key players as the county has been working to iron out plans for not only revamping the fairgrounds, but possibly developing a multi-events center that could expand, or even replace the Glacier Ice Rink.
Today the group told county commissioners hockey, and other ice sports like figure skating and curling, show no signs of slowing down. In fact youth and adult hockey numbers have skyrocketed, with as many as 78 adult teams and more than 800 players, making Missoula one of the top hockey towns in the U.S. Add record crowds for the Maulers, and an increasing number of tournaments and estimates are as many as 150,000 people visit the rink every year.
