Having spent most of my hockey life around MA and RI rinks, and having managed (or been hockey director) at two MA arenas, I’ve noticed something rather odd about rink hours since I’ve relocated to Florida…
In all the Northern rinks I frequented, adult hockey programs or leagues never had access to prime-time ice. The thinking of most owners or managers I knew was that any ice from about 5pm to about 10pm was considered prime-time, and it was mainly dedicated to youth practices, or special clinics. Another way of looking at it was that school aged kids couldn’t be asked to skate beyond about 10pm.
Yet, I am seeing some rinks around Central Florida giving adult leagues and clinics 8pm and 9pm start times. ???
With that, I’m wondering what managers in other parts of the US are doing in this regard, and how early their adult programs begin.
