I am going to start by introducing myself to you, the reader. My name is Josh Redman and I am 33 years old, married with two children and live in Eureka, Illinois. I have been married for nearly nine years; I actually met my wife at a hockey game! My two boys are both very active in sports. They both play high school football, and my oldest son wrestles, while my youngest plays baseball.
I am a machinist by trade aspiring to do radio play-by-play or sports talk radio. I have a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications Radio Broadcasting from American Broadcasting School in Oklahoma City, OK. Before attending ABS, I acquired my associates degree from Illinois Central College in East Peoria, IL. While at ICC, I performed a weekly sports talk radio show and did play-by-play for ICC athletics on the campus radio station.
I know you read that and probably thought Eureka, IL, not really a hockey hotbed. I would say that you are 100% correct on that assumption. Eureka is nestled in a rural setting just east of Peoria, and north of Bloomington. On the larger scale, it sits pretty much between Chicago and St. Louis. If you follow minor league hockey you know that Peoria is home of the Rivermen, formerly the AHL affiliate of the St. Louis Blues, now of the SPHL and Bloomington is home of the former Blaze of the CHL and now Thunder of the SPHL. There is plenty of hockey to watch live if you are willing to drive just a couple hours: Chicago Wolves, Rockford IceHogs, Quad City Mallards, Iowa Wild, to name a few in the minor league ranks.
The extent of my hockey background is minimal; if not for the fact of being a fan, I would not really have a hockey background. I have loved hockey since I was about twelve years old and actually was a Blackhawks fan while younger. I went through a period where I begged my parents to let me play hockey, and their answer was always a solid “No, you don’t even know how to ice skate.”
That has changed; I now know how to skate! My youngest son played a bit of inline hockey when he was 5, but wasn’t a big fan of the game, even though he would tell you different. So I guess you could say for a winter I was a hockey dad.
I am a volunteer for the Bloomington Thunder, this coming season being my second season helping with the stat team. I am the person that sits between the penalty boxes and relays the penalties and goals scored to the press box from the on ice official to be posted on PointStreak. I would not say it is the most glamorous of volunteer hobbies, but I have learned an extensive amount of chirps and insults from some of the best.
I hope that you have a little more insight now about me; I will admit that I am not a professional writer and any opinions expressed in my writings are mine. I always encourage you, the reader, to send me any comments or ideas you may have. Also do not be afraid to correct me. I admit I am sometimes wrong and welcome being corrected. I look forward to many more articles and hearing from you. If you have suggestions on newsworthy stories or events around out state, please send them to me.
Thank you for reading,
